Outreach Ministry 10-Year Anniversary: Paying It Forward!

Millicent and Evelyn’s Journey: From Orphanage to Leaders at PFSHC

The story of Millicent and Evelyn, from being placed in an orphanage as toddlers to becoming college graduates and emerging leaders at Pope Francis School & Health Centre (PFSHC), is a powerful testament to perseverance, hope, and faith.

Tragically, both girls, because of family tragedies, were placed in a local orphanage, a common reality for many families two decades ago. Life there was difficult: resources were scarce due to mismanagement, leaving the children facing food insecurity, a lack of running water, and frequent power outages. Despite these challenges, Millicent and Evelyn were eager to learn, though even basic supplies like pencils and paper were hard to come by.

Their lives changed when the Pope Francis Outreach Ministry met them at age 14 while they were in middle school. Each day, they walked 5km through the bush to attend an under-resourced public school. With the support of PFSHC, they received school fees, uniforms, book bags, and most importantly, encouragement. Though they were behind academically due to their upbringing, their determination and hard work helped them catch up. They passed their middle school exit exams and advanced to boarding high school.

High school brought new challenges, but after a year of remedial studies, they succeeded in passing their exams and graduating. Inspired by their own experiences, both women chose paths of service: Millicent pursued Social Work, while Evelyn studied Early Childhood Education.
Since the Bishop Konzen School opened in 2022, Millicent and Evelyn have returned during every college break to volunteer, Evelyn as a teacher’s aide and Millicent assisting the PFSHC social worker. Their firsthand understanding of hardship makes them uniquely qualified to support the vulnerable children at PFSHC.

In 2024, the Pope Francis Outreach Ministry celebrated Evelyn’s graduation from Holy Spirit College of Education and 2025, Millicent’s graduation from the University of Ghana. Evelyn is currently completing her national service obligation at a school two hours away but will return to teach at Bishop Konzen School afterward. Millicent, too, will join the PFSHC staff as an assistant social worker after her service year.
Both women are now role models and future mentors for PFSHC students, proving that with resilience and support, even the most difficult beginnings can lead to bright futures. Their stories embody the mission of the Pope Francis Outreach Ministry transforming lives through education, compassion, and faith.

Cheers to 10 years of impact✨

Past Initiatives

Annual Christmas Party

Since 2016 PFSHC has hosted a fabulous Christmas party at Margaret Marquart Catholic Hospital in Kpando. Many of the children who attend are from very rural poor villages. Each receives outpatient treatment at Margaret Marquart Catholic Hospital.

Gabikpo Island School

Gabipko Island School is located in the middle of Lake Volta. Sadly Lake Volta is known for the trafficking of children for labor.  It is inhabited by 310 residents. There is no electricity  or running water. The school is an open pavilion that has approximately 40 students.

Helping a Homeless Family

A single mother was living in a 6′ x 4′ straw hut that was only 2 foot high with her children. Through generous donors PFSHC was able to build her a home.

Soccer Tournament

The first annual PFSHC tournament was held in October 2019 with the second tournament held in November 2020. Both Boys and Girls teams were formed. The local soccer clubs and local public schools all received soccer balls and equipment that was collected in Tucson, AZ and Naples, FL.

Book Fair

In October 2020 PFSHC held a Book Fair in the village of Avenui home of PFSHC. Since school had been closed since March 2020 excitement was in the air. PFSHC had received 1000+ primary academic school books from St. Ann Catholic School, Naples, Fl. and St. John The Evangelist Catholic School in Hapeville, GA. With the support of tribal elders the crowd was overwhelming. Moms and dads were in line early to obtain valuable education assistance for their children.

In celebration of PFSHC three year anniversary our Outreach Ministry donated waiting room chairs to the Trafalgar Teaching Hospitals Children’s Ward. PFSHC is grateful for the support the Children’s Ward staff has provided PFSHC in our care of our vulnerable children.
